Reconstruction and Visualization of Fiber and Laminar Structure in the Normal Human Heart from Ex Vivo DTMRI Data

چکیده

(148 words) Objective: The human heart is composed of a helical network of muscle fibers organized to form sheets that are separated by cleavage surfaces responsible for the orthotropic mechanical properties of cardiac muscle. The purpose of this study is the visualization of these structures in three dimensions. Methods: Anisotropic least square filtering followed by fiber and sheet tracking techniques were applied to Diffusion Tensor Magnetic Resonance Imaging data of the excised human heart. The sheets were reconstructed by surfaces that we defined locally from the second and third eigenvector of the diffusion tensor. Results: The fibers are shown to lie in sheets that have transmural structure which correspond to histological studies published in the literature. Quantitative measurements show that the sheets are organized into laminar orientations of two dominant populations. Conclusions: A visualization algorithm was developed to demonstrate the complex three-dimensional orientation of the fibers and sheets in human myocardium.

Reconstruction and Visualization of Fiber and Sheet Structure with Regularized Tensor Diffusion MRI in the Human Heart

Background — The human heart is composed of a helical network of muscle fibers. These fibers are organized to form sheets that are separated by cleavage surfaces. This complex structure of fibers and sheets is responsible for the orthotropic mechanical properties of cardiac muscle. The understanding of the configuration of the 3D fiber and sheet structure is important for modeling the mechanica...

Reconstructionof Human Mandibular Continuity Defects with Allogenic Scaffold and Autologousmarrow Mesenchymal Stem Cells

Background Mandibular continuity defects occur after tumor resection, maxillofacial injury, or osteomyelitis. Despite the current availability of a plethora of treatment modalities, bone substitutes, and various clinical adjuncts, an exact reconstructive recapitulation of large bony defects continues to be beyond reach. In this clinical pilot study, we report a novel method for reconstruction ...

Ex vivo 3D diffusion tensor imaging and quantification of cardiac laminar structure.

A three-dimensional (3D) diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) method for measuring cardiac fiber structure at high spatial resolution is presented. The method was applied to the ex vivo reconstruction of the fiber architecture of seven canine hearts. A novel hypothesis-testing method was developed and used to show that distinct populations of secondary and tertiary eigenvalues may be distinguished ...

Human Atlas of Cardiac Architecture from DT-MRI

1. ABSTRACT A human statistical atlas of the cardiac fiber architecture is constructed from ex-vivo diffusion tensor images and is based on a set of 10 normal human hearts. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that such study has been conducted with human data. We have developed a semi-automated method where only minimal interactions are required for the segmentation of the myoc...

Detection and Characterization of Human Teeth Caries Using 2D Correlation Raman Spectroscopy

Background: Carious lesions are formed by a complex process of chemical interaction between dental enamel and its environment. They can cause cavities and pain, and are expensive to fix. It is hard to characterize in vivo as a result of environment factors and remineralization by ions in the oral cavity. Objectives: The development of a technique that gives early diagnosis which is non-invasi...
